3 Signs of a Toxic Workplace (and What to Do About Each One)

Every job has hard weeks. But a toxic workplace is different: it doesn't just tire you out, it slowly convinces you that the problem is you. After years in IT and hundreds of coaching conversations with working professionals, I've seen the same three signs come up again and again.

1. Your wins disappear, but your mistakes echo

In a healthy team, good work gets noticed and errors get corrected. In a toxic one, the ratio flips: the presentation you rescued is forgotten by Monday, but the typo in one email comes up in your review months later.

What to do: Start a private "wins file" today. Every week, write down what you delivered, who it helped, and any numbers attached. This isn't vanity — it's evidence. It protects your confidence from selective memory, and it becomes gold when you ask for a raise, a promotion, or your next role.

2. Saying "no" feels dangerous

Notice what happens in your body when you're asked to take on one more thing. If the honest answer is "I can't" but the words that come out are "sure, no problem" — because you fear the consequences of declining — your workplace has trained you out of your own boundaries.

What to do: You don't have to start with a hard no. Try a conditional yes: "I can take this on — which of my current priorities should move to make room?" This puts the trade-off where it belongs: with the person assigning the work.

3. You've stopped being yourself at work

Toxic environments make you smaller. You double-check simple decisions. You rehearse sentences before speaking in meetings. You feel relief when a meeting is cancelled — not because you're busy, but because you're bracing.

What to do: This one deserves the most attention, because it follows you home. Begin rebuilding outside work first: one activity per week that reminds you who you are when nobody's evaluating you. From that steadier ground, you can decide clearly whether the environment can be improved — or whether your talents deserve a better one.

The most important thing to remember

A toxic workplace is a fact about the workplace, not about you. The exhaustion, the self-doubt, the Sunday dread — these are reasonable responses to an unreasonable environment.
